How to Grow Potatoes in a Grow Bag

Grow bags are one of the easiest small-space potato methods: portable, well-aerated, and simple to empty at harvest.

What you need

• A fabric grow bag (roughly 10–20+ gallons for meaningful yields)
• Fluffy, well-drained potting mix
• Certified seed potatoes
• Full sun and frequent water checks

Planting method

1. Fill the bag with several inches of mix
2. Place 2–4 seed pieces depending on bag size (do not overcrowd)
3. Cover with a few inches of mix
4. As stems grow, add mix around them (bag “hilling”)
5. Keep evenly moist — bags dry faster than garden soil

Care tips

• Elevate slightly so drainage is never blocked
• Fertilize lightly during the season (fertilizer basics)
• Watch for greening at the surface and add mix

Harvest

Tip the bag out onto a tarp or open the side dump — far gentler than forking a bed.
